Cape Town’s dramatic coastline to the south of Camps Bay is ruggedly beautiful and as part of the Table Mountain National Park, it’s largely undeveloped. Follow the famous Chapmans’ Peak past the brooding Twelve Apostles, the spine of mountains that run down to Cape Point, while the ocean pounds on the rocks below. It is not too far from here at Cape Agulhas, the most southern tip of the Africa continent, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet.

Winelands

Just an hour’s drive inland from Cape Town, at the heart of the Cape Winelands you will find South Africa’s so-called Golden Triangle; Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl. In the shadow of a continuous belt of Cape fold mountains, lies a series of generous valleys known as the Cape Winelands – a collection of historic towns, little hamlets and Cape Dutch farmsteads that provide well-regarded South African wines to the world. A great deal of the allure of the winelands is owed to the spectacular natural setting. These mountains create an incredible scenic backdrop, but they are also one of the reasons wines do so well here. Their geological compositions provide unique soil conditions that directly affect the character of wine.

The Franschhoek Wine Route is characterized by an inherent French flair. The town itself is rich with Huguenot history. Franschhoek (or “French Corner”) is named for the French Huguenots who settled here in the 18th century. Blessed with perhaps the most perfect setting of any winelands town, it is also South Africa’s unofficial food and wine gastronomic capital, offering a world-class gourmet experience. The ideal place to settle in for an alfresco lunch.

Paarl (Afrikaans for “pearl”) is named for the polished granite domed mountain that rises behind it. Founded in 1720, Paarl feels rather unattractive by Boland standards, but its wine route includes some of the finest vineyards and several first-class restaurants. The Paarl Wine Route is also called the ‘Red Route’ for its legendary red wines. Cabernet Sauvignon, port and Shiraz wines have established Paarl’s place on the global wine map and the region has repeatedly received international awards for these wines. Nothing complements a good glass of wine quite like a good cheese. This delectable culinary tradition has extended to the Boland as well, and some of South Africa’s finest cheeses are produced in this region. It is here where you’ll find wine farms like Fairview, popular for its cheese and wine pairing and Spice Route known for its much-loved chocolate, gin, beer, wine, and ice cream tastings – and good food.

The Stellenbosch Wine Route is South Africa’s oldest wine route. This architectural jewel is the second-oldest town in South Africa, and lies at the heart of the winelands. Stellenbosch was founded in 1679 by the Dutch Governor Simon van der Stel. Some of South Africa’s finest wines are cultivated in this scenic region. South Africa’s high-quality olive oils have started making waves in the international circuit, often beating out heavyweights like Italy, Spain and Greece. The Boland’s Mediterranean-like climate provides ideal conditions for groves to flourish.

Klein Karoo & Oudtshoorn

The famous Cape Route 62 is a tourist route connecting the Western and Eastern Cape. Not only is it the world’s longest wine route a whopping 850km, Route 62 has also been named the world’s best road trip destination by CNN Travel, offering a scenic alternative to the N2 highway. The easily accessible towns along Route 62 all offer ample opportunity for discovery. From visits to wineries and game reserves, tribal art, cultural tours, museums and for the more adventurous, hiking trails and mountain climbing, 4×4 routes, canoeing, horse riding, fishing and caving. Route 62 is an exciting experience, even for the well-travelled. Stop for lunch at one of the diners in the town of Barrydale, nestled at the foot of the majestic Langeberg Mountain range. The iconic town of Oudtshoorn lies in the Klein Karoo (Little Karoo) bordering the picturesque Garden Route region halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha).

Primarily known as the ostrich capital of the world, Oudtshoorn has quickly gained the reputation of being a cultural, heritage and adventure sport hotspot. Encompassed by unique landscapes, the town is centred between the awe-inspiring Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges. The history and development of Oudtshoorn are inextricably connected with the growth of the ostrich feather industry from as early as 1860. Ostriches still form a vital part of the trade today, from tourism to agriculture. Come and meet the large flightless birds, ride an ostrich, buy ostrich curios and even sample the famous ostrich steak. There is nothing like a Karoo night sky. The clarity of the sky above Oudtshoorn is practically unparalleled, the Milky Way arcs over you like a giant swathe of smoke. Situated not far from Oudtshoorn is the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere and among the largest in the world. With an average rainfall of less than 150mm a year, Oudtshoorn is the ideal location for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and exploring the wonders of nature in one of the nearby nature reserves. A visit to Oudtshoorn is not complete without seeing the world-famous Cango Caves, Africa’s largest heritage show cave system and a spectacular underground wonder of the Klein Karoo. Some of the biggest stalagmite formations in the world are set in Precambrian limestone (a time about 4500 million years ago). The spectacular dripstone caverns with their vast halls and towering formations are one of the world’s great natural wonders, sculptured by nature through the ages.

Cape Aloes (Aloe ferox) are in full bloom in the Western Cape and Karoo region. Apart from its skin-soothing and healing properties, it is also an immune system stimulant. European explorers, traders and settlers ventured around the tip of Africa and into Southern Africa where they encountered the Khoisan – the world’s most ancient people. The Khoisan had been using Aloe ferox as medicine for thousands of years. We know this because Aloe ferox is one of the few plants depicted in Bushmen cave paintings in South Africa, showing humans depicted alongside Aloe Ferox, which indicates they made use of it. The first evidence of Aloe ferox being used commercially was in 1761. The story goes that a slave working for a farmer named Johannes Petrus de Wit showed him the age-old art of tapping aloes to derive the medicinal bitters or ‘lump’ from the plant – which is a most effective laxative. This was then supplied to the Dutch East India Company and exported to Europe. The Khoisan’s medicinal plant knowledge was part of their oral tradition. A demonstration of aloe tapping, using the same traditional method the Bushman used, can be seen when visiting the Allcare Aloe Centre. The 400 species of aloe that exist in the world are indigenous only to Africa and Madagascar, with a few species in Yemen. Aloe is the world’s greatest plant.

Garden Route & Knysna

From visits to wineries and game reserves, tribal art, cultural tours, museums and for the more adventurous, hiking trails and mountain climbing, 4×4 routes, canoeing, horse riding, fishing and caving. Route 62 is an exciting experience, even for the well-travelled. Stop for lunch at one of the diners in the town of Barrydale, nestled at the foot of the majestic Langeberg mountain range. This vintage town has quirkiness written all over it, an oasis with charm. It is here where you can find Diesel & Crème’s famous mouthwatering gourmet milkshakes. After a long day’s travel unwind in one of the region’s invigorating hot-springs, revel in luxury or relax in rustic tranquillity, a journey to the unexpected. As you follow Route 62, the natural beauty of the region’s mountains, fauna, rivers, valleys and plains are evident. The diverse scenery and vegetation changes as you make your way into the Karoo, a semi-desert area.

The iconic town of Oudtshoorn lies in the Klein Karoo (Little Karoo) bordering the picturesque Garden Route region halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha). Primarily known as the ostrich capital of the world, Oudtshoorn has quickly gained the reputation of being a cultural, heritage and adventure sport hotspot. Encompassed by unique landscapes, the town is centred between the awe-inspiring Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges. The history and development of Oudtshoorn is inextricably connected with the growth of the ostrich feather industry from as early as 1860. Ostriches still form a vital part of the trade today; from tourism to agriculture. Come and meet the large flightless birds, ride an ostrich, buy ostrich curios and even sample the famous ostrich steak. There is nothing like a Karoo night sky. The clarity of the sky above Oudtshoorn is practically unparalleled, the Milky Way arcs over you like a giant swathe of smoke. Situated not far from Oudtshoorn is the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere and among the largest in the world. With an average rainfall of less than 150mm a year, Oudtshoorn is the ideal location for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and exploring the wonders of nature in one of the nearby nature reserves. This town of wonders is sure to impress with its plethora of offerings and classic country lifestyle. Enjoy some of the local Karoo cuisines with a crisp chardonnay, craft beer or gin, admire the fauna and flora, or take a plunge in the world’s first crocodile cage dive.

A visit to Oudtshoorn is not complete without seeing the world-famous Cango Caves, Africa’s largest heritage show cave system and a spectacular underground wonder of the Klein Karoo. Some of the biggest stalagmite formations in the world set in Precambrian limestone (a time about 4500 million years ago). The spectacular dripstone caverns with their vast halls and towering formations is one of the world’s great natural wonders, sculptured by nature through the ages.

Cape Aloes (Aloe ferox) are in full bloom in the Western Cape and Karoo region. Apart from its skin-soothing and healing properties, it is also an immune system stimulant. European explorers, traders and settlers ventured around the tip of Africa and into Southern Africa where they encountered the Khoisan – the world’s most ancient people. The Khoisan had been using Aloe ferox as medicine for thousands of years. We know this because Aloe ferox is one of the few plants depicted in Bushmen cave paintings in South Africa, showing humans depicted alongside Aloe ferox, which indicates they made use of it. The first evidence of Aloe ferox being used commercially was in 1761. The story goes that a slave working for a farmer named Johannes Petrus de Wit showed him the age-old art of tapping aloes to derive the medicinal bitters or ‘lump’ from the plant – which is a most effective laxative. This was then supplied to the Dutch East India Company and exported to Europe. The Khoisan’s medicinal plant knowledge was part of their oral tradition. A demonstration of aloe tapping, using the same traditional method the Bushman used, can be seen when visiting the Allcare Aloe centre. The 400 species of aloe that exist in the world are indigenous only to Africa and Madagascar, with a few species in Yemen. Aloe, the world’s greatest plant.

Safari & Surrounds

Set against the backdrop of the majestic Langeberg mountain range, the Garden Route Game Lodge guards the entrance to South Africa’s world-famous Garden Route Coast. This malaria-free family-owned private game reserve is home to an abundance of animal and birdlife, including the Big 5. See lions, elephants, white rhinos, Cape buffalos, cheetahs, the elusive Cape mountain leopard, a rare treat to spot on safari, along with giraffes, zebras, numerous antelope species, black wildebeest and more. Get your cameras ready! Seeing these majestic animals face to face is unforgettable. This reserve has a dramatic landscape that supports a wide variety of plants, animals and birds. The game reserve borders the Overberg District where more than half of the remaining population of the threatened Blue Crane reside, expect to witness these graceful birds in flight and hear their distinctive loud call.

Go on exciting early morning- and late afternoon game drives when the wildlife is most active, as they tend to rest in the heat of the day. Qualified field guides track the animals and interpret nature, allowing you to sit back, relax and enjoy. The safari drives last 2 – 3 hours depending on how much time is spent at each sighting and evenings includes a sundowner stop at one of the popular lookouts in the game reserve.

Enjoy the view from the Serengeti restaurant, go for a swim in one of the pools or enjoy an educational tour with a resident curator; from the deadly Black Mamba to the mighty Anaconda, home to 28 different snake species, Nile crocodiles, tortoises and rock monitors. Take a guided Game Walk or go mountain biking (the trail is rated medium difficulty). Indulge in Afternoon Tea or pamper yourself at the Ayana Spa.

Dining in the Serengeti Restaurant is a relaxed affair where guests can enjoy one of their famous traditional South African dishes from the a la carte menu while reflecting on the days’ activities. An interactive dining experience where safari cuisine is prepared to your liking. The expansive wooden decks overlooking the valleys below allow guests to relax and unwind to the sounds of the African night.

Jakkalsvlei offers a delightful wine experience nearby. The Garden Route Game Lodge is an ideal haven from which to explore the wonders of the Garden Route and Klein Karoo.

earth, and the mountains.

My challenge was not only difficult and an enormous challenge physically, but mentally as well. In the process, I raised awareness for EDS and believe that every person with EDS (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome) and the people affected by it, should have access to the appropriate medical services, care, and support. From the beginning, my desire was to spread a message of hope.

Day 1: Cape Town Arrival

Zebra Adventures will be waiting for you in the arrival hall at Cape Town International Airport and transfer you to your boutique hotel, Romney Park Luxury Apartments in Greenpoint, where you will spend 4 nights. Enjoy some leisure time next to the pool before checking in and attending the group orientation meeting, which marks the official start of your tour at 1:00 pm. We depart early evening for an unforgettable welcome dinner.

Day 3: Cape Peninsula, Penguins & Sunset Dinner

Explore the beautiful Cape Peninsula, starting with a scenic drive along the Atlantic coast. It’s the ideal way to kick off your day, surrounded by breathtaking views and fresh ocean air. We’ll continue along the famous Chapman’s Peak Drive, known for its 114 twists and turns, striking rock formations, and scenic roads. It’s time to grab your sandals and head out to explore the beautiful coastal area of Cape Town. Kalk Bay has been recognized by Forbes Magazine as one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world, and you’ll soon see why. This charming spot boasts art nouveau chic and tons of personality, offering a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. After you’ve explored this little gem, it’s time to head over to Simonstown to see the African penguins in their natural habitat. These little fellows are truly amazing, and you’ll fall in love with them in no time. Lunch at Boulders Beach and if you are lucky, enjoy a swim with the penguins in the warmer waters of False Bay – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you don’t want to miss. Enjoy the beach and shop at the African stalls. Back at Romney Park, you’ll have some time to freshen up before we head out for dinner. Camps Bay, nestled between Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, offers white sandy beaches and stunning views. It’s the ideal spot for sipping cocktails and enjoying a magical dinner while witnessing one of the world’s most cherished sunsets.

Day 5: Explore the Wine Region

Whether you are a wine lover or not, the breathtaking scenery of vineyards and mountain ranges in Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Franschhoek will leave you mesmerised. We’ll start our wine adventure at Kanonkop, named the 2022 red wine producer of the year by IWSC. Here, you’ll get to try South Africa’s signature red wine grape, Pinotage. Our next stop is Waterford Estate with its natural beauty. Stroll through paths lined with fragrant citrus trees and expansive green lawns and indulge in a delightful chocolate and wine pairing experience. Our next stop is the famous Boschendal Wine Estate, voted ‘The Most Beautiful Vineyard’ in the world by Conde Nast Traveller in 2020. Boschendal is one of the oldest farms in South Africa, dating back to 1685. Much of the fresh produce you’ll find here is sustainably grown on the farm itself. Enjoy a delightful lunch featuring contemporary farm-to-table cuisine, prepared with the finest local, seasonal, and ethically sourced ingredients. Following lunch, we will enjoy a wine tasting under the beautiful old oak trees, followed by checking in at Boschendal’s Retreat Cottages for a two-night stay. Nestled under the majestic Simonsberg mountain, your accommodation offers breathtaking views. You can take advantage of the natural pool and the idyllic setting that seems to freeze time.

Day 7: Road Trip: Route 62 to Oudshoorn

Say goodbye to the Winelands as we start our road trip and head to the renowned Garden Route. Travel through the picturesque Breede River Valley and follow the world’s longest wine route which is filled with hidden gems. Our route is none other than Route 62, which is named the world’s best road trip destination by CNN Travel. Stop for lunch at one of Route 62’s well-known vintage diners in Barrydale, a quaint vintage village situated at the foot of the Klein (little) Karoo and Overberg. As we follow Route 62 through the mountains, we’ll witness the changing scenery and vegetation as we make our way into the Karoo, a semi-desert area. Oudtshoorn is known as the ostrich capital of the world. Back in the late 1800s, ostrich feathers were the height of fashion (literally) and people from all over the world sought them out for fashion and costumes. Royalty, maharajahs, emperors, and fashionistas alike, were after these fabulous feathers. A trip to Oudtshoorn is not complete without visiting an ostrich farm. These giant flightless birds are fascinating creatures, and you’ll have the chance to test the strength of an egg and learn about its history. We’ll be staying at Surval Boutique Olive Estate for one night, which is situated outside of Oudtshoorn, a beautiful olive farm surrounded by vineyards, fruit orchards, and mountain ranges. The clarity of the sky above Oudtshoorn is one of the best places in the world for stargazing. A night sky like you have never seen before!

Day 9: Knysna & Elephant Experience

Wake up to the fragrance of the sea and the enchanting songs of seagulls.
Today is a day to unwind and embrace all that Knysna has to offer. Numerous options await your exploration. Discover the shops on Thesen Island, rent a bicycle or paddle boat, or bask in the sun at the beach. Hop on the ferry and venture to Featherbed Nature Reserve, where your ticket includes a 4×4 trail drive to the start of a scenic walk through the reserve. Knysna is home to Africa’s only paddle-driven vessel, a paddle cruiser, offering a one-of-a-kind experience on the Knysna Lagoon. Return to the hotel as we depart shortly after 3 pm for a truly special treat. Knysna Elephant Park awaits, just a short 25-minute drive from Thesen Island. Here, you’ll have the chance to engage with a remarkable herd of five African elephants, the country’s largest domesticated matriarchal group. Feed and stroll among these majestic African giants, while learning about the significance of conservation. This awe-inspiring encounter is sure to leave an indelible mark on your life! As evening falls, we’ll return to Knysna for a leisurely dinner and witness yet another breathtaking African sunset.

Day 11: Safari & Spa

Today is all about relaxation and exploration. Start with an early morning game drive or opt for a later afternoon one, or even both, the choice is yours. Consider swapping a game drive for a spa treatment (a list of choices will be provided). Throughout the day, indulge in the luxurious spa offerings, including the sauna, steam room, indoor heated pool and more. Let your expert therapist melt away your stress with revitalizing African-themed treatments and signature oils. Enjoy the picturesque views from the restaurant, take a refreshing swim, and if you’re feeling energetic, play tennis or join a 2.5-hour guided game walk to experience the Garden Route’s rich fauna and flora. Follow a field guide through diverse habitats like coastal Renosterveld and Cape Fynbos. Enjoy your afternoon game drive and as the day comes to an end, unwind with sunset cocktails at the restaurant, soaking in the breathtaking surroundings.

Day 13: Time to say “Hamba Kahle”

See the African sunrise one last time on your early morning private game drive before breakfast. Suitcases packed and ready to make our way to Cape Town International Airport where we will say our final goodbyes until we meet again. Our scheduled arrival time at Cape Town International Airport will be between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm.

Day 2: Cultural Experience

Today is all about immersing yourself in the rich culture of South Africa and her Mother City. Take a drive-by tour of historic buildings and landmarks such as the Grand Parade, the Castle of Good Hope, and St George’s Cathedral As you stroll through the Company Gardens, which date back to 1652, you’ll be surrounded by the sights, smells, and culture of the city. Get an introduction to where and how our city started, and learn about the Cape Malay community, the heartbeat of The Cape. You’ll hear stories from the past and discover how we are building a rainbow nation with a promising future. Walk through the colourful Bo-Kaap, where you’ll start your Cape Malay cooking course and learn about masala from a local spice merchant. Your host will guide and entertain you with stories of food and culture before returning to their family kitchen via cobbled streets. Cook up a storm and sit down together for a traditional lunch. We’ll return to the hotel where you can relax and cool down in the pool before ending the day on a high note with a 12–15-minute helicopter ride along Cape Town’s peninsula. You’ll be in awe of the Atlantic Ocean stretching out to the horizon and might even catch a glimpse of some majestic whales and playful dolphins below. The views of the Cape Town City Bowl, the Peninsula’s pristine white beaches, and the Twelve Apostles Mountain range are simply stunning. After your flight, explore the V&A Waterfront and enjoy a leisurely dinner of your choice. It’s the perfect way to cap off a fantastic day.

Day 4: Table Mountain & Cultural Dinner

Today promises to be an exciting day as we journey to Table Mountain, officially one of the 7 New Wonders of Nature. After we arrive at the summit via cable car, you can explore the well-marked trails and take in the stunning views of Cape Town from above. A perfect time for reflection. You can send a postcard from the gift shop or grab a snack in the cafe before we descend by cable car. Following our descent, we’ll head over to Signal Hill for more breathtaking views of the city and the mountain you just explored. We will enjoy lunch at the iconic Mojo Market, known for its wide variety of food options catering to every taste. After lunch we will head back to the hotel to relax, pack for tomorrow morning’s departure to the Winelands, and get ready for a true African treat, a cultural dining experience. Dress colourful, come excited, and feel the rhythm and soul of our people as you enjoy the food and music of our rainbow nation.

Day 6: Explore the Wine Region

Wake up to beautiful panoramic views of the Drakenstein Mountains and the soothing sound of a nearby stream, with the vineyards not far away. Our first stop for the day is at Babylonstoren, one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms, situated in the Franschhoek wine valley. The Gardens of Babylonstoren has a fruit and vegetable garden of beauty and diversity and evokes a sense of well-being. Amidst all the wonderful offerings at Babylonstoren, you will have the opportunity to join Babylonstoren’s Olive Oil Tour. Learn about the cold-press process used to transform olives into golden olive oil and the preservation process of our table olives. The tour ends on a delicious note in the olive tasting room, where you can taste the olives, olive oils, and tapenades alongside a variety of Babylonstoren products to inspire flavourful olive pairings. Next, we make our way to Fairview Wines for a delightful wine tasting. After lunch, step back in time, as you savour L’Ormarins Cap Classique at Anthonij Rupert Wines in the estate’s historic Manor House, furnished in mid-nineteenth-century Cape Dutch style. We’ll return to Boschendal where you can pick up some snacks or a light dinner from the deli and farm shop before heading back to our accommodation for some relaxation.

Day 8: Cango Caves, Knysna & the Garden Route

Wake up to a stunning sunrise and panoramic views of the Swartberg Mountains and the Schoemanshoek Valley. After breakfast we’llbe driving along the Swartberg mountain pass to the awe-inspiring Cango Caves, located inside the foothills of the Swartberg. This extensive limestone system of tunnels and chambers dates back millions of years. Leave the Klein Karoo and journey over the mountains via the Outeniqua Pass. Be greeted by an abundance of greenery as you enter the Garden Route on your way to Knysna. As the Knysna Heads fade into the distance, we embark on the final leg of our tour – safari! The stunning malaria-free Botlierskop Game Reserve is home to a variety of free-roaming wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, hippos, and over 200 bird species. Your elegant and luxurious tented accommodation is nestled beside the tranquil Moordkuil River and gracefully perched on wooden decks, offering breathtaking views of the reserve, river, and majestic mountains in the distance. The itinerary mentioned above serves as a preliminary plan. Your final itinerary will be sent to you three months before your tour. You will receive a basic medical form to complete roughly four months before your arrival in SA. If you have received any medical treatment or sustained any injuries within six months before you arrive in South Africa, we require a ‘fit to fly’ letter from your GP. This is to help you while in South Africa, as we do not want you or any of your group members to miss out on any of our exciting activities and to keep up with a jam-packed itinerary. We encourage a moderate fitness level. We have a daily itinerary with pre-booked excursions, and we encourage everyone to participate on a daily basis.
