Please note: Banks in both the USA and the UK have a tendency to flag and block payments later in the afternoon and evening due to the amount involved. This could trigger a fraud alert, but don’t worry, it’s actually quite common. If this happens, you’ll need to call your bank and explain that the payment is for travel, and they’ll be able to free up your account. To avoid any potential issues, it’s a good idea to try and make payments earlier in the day if possible.

Nestled in the heart of the French Alps at the foot of Mont Blanc, Chamonix is a legendary alpine town that continues to captivate adventurers, nature lovers, and culture seekers alike. Mont Blanc, standing at 4,805 meters (15,766 feet), is not only Europe’s tallest mountain but also ranks as the 11th tallest in the world, making Chamonix a truly iconic destination. Known as the mountain capital of the world, the town is surrounded by lush forests and charming villages and is celebrated for its vibrant alpine lifestyle. Located near the borders of Italy and Switzerland, Chamonix’s reputation as the adventure capital of France, first earned when it hosted the 1924 Winter Olympics, continues to thrive. Summer transforms the town into a paradise for outdoor and nature lovers, with panoramic trails, high-altitude adventures accessible via cable cars and mountain railways, and long daylight hours perfect for exploring, relaxing, and reconnecting with nature. Chamonix in summer is truly unforgettable.

Overview

Over eight unforgettable days, you’ll explore the Alpine culture and breathtaking landscapes of Chamonix, with a set itinerary that offers plenty of flexibility. From leisurely walks and market visits to sampling local cured meats, cheeses, and breads, you’ll experience the true essence of mountain life. Whether you choose to cook in our beautiful chalet with a glass of French wine or explore the village’s lively atmosphere, enriched by open-air cafés, charming restaurants, and cultural events that celebrate mountain heritage, every moment is yours to enjoy. We’ll visit Le Brévent to watch paragliders take flight against the stunning Mont Blanc massif and rise early for an ascent to Aiguille du Midi to greet “Monty” (our nickname for Mont Blanc), with panoramic views and a glimpse into the famous Vallée Blanche. Explore the nearby dramatic Gorge de la Diosaz, where glacier waters rush through steep mountain walls. Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival & Opening Dinner

Bienvenue à Chamonix! Your transfer shuttle will be waiting for you at Geneva Airport.
Early Arrivals: If you’re arriving 1–2 days early (advised) to explore Geneva or Lausanne, you’re welcome to make your own way to Chamonix or meet your transfer shuttle at Geneva Airport at a confirmed time. As always, aim to arrive at the chalet in time for our orientation meeting at 3:00 pm. If your flight gets in early, you’ll be able to check in right away. After our meeting, take some time to settle in and unpack (if you haven’t already). I recommend spending the afternoon at the chalet to relax and settle in, shaking off the jet lag. At around 6:00 pm, I’ll be hosting a special welcome dinner just for you. A relaxed evening, great conversation, and a glass of wine/iced tea in hand – all in the cosy comfort of our alpine home. It’s the perfect way to kick off our adventure together!

• Welcome dinner – included
• Airport shuttle transfer – included

Day 3 - Meet Monty!

We’ll start the day early with a self-serve breakfast at the chalet before heading out on foot – an 800m walk to the starting point of our excursion (Le Mulet is a free, electric shuttle bus service that provides transport around the centre of Chamonix, this will be discussed). Our adventure begins with a cable car ride up to the iconic Aiguille du Midi, reaching an altitude of 3,842m (12,605 ft). This is the closest you’ll get to the summit of Mont Blanc, known locally as La Dame Blanche (The White Lady), though we affectionately call her Monty. The views from the top are absolutely breathtaking. On a clear day, you might even spot the Matterhorn in Switzerland. At the summit, we’ll visit a fascinating museum where you’ll learn about the effects of altitude on the body over a long period and how Mont Blanc was first climbed. For those feeling adventurous, there’s the chance to step into “The Void” – a glass room with a transparent floor suspended at 3,842m, making it the highest attraction in Europe. After soaking in the panoramic views and glaciers – and perhaps picking up a souvenir or two – we’ll descend by cable car to Plan de l’Aiguille at 2,354m (7,723 ft). Here, we’ll warm up with a hot chocolate and our snacks, as summit temperatures can drop to -10 °C (14 °F). From this point, an optional hike begins with a descent of 147m (482 ft) to 2,207m (7,241 ft), leading us to a charming mountain refuge famed for its lemon and blueberry pie. We’ll pause here for a drink and take in the stunning views over Le Brévent and the village below. Afterwards, we’ll hike back up to the cable car – slow and steady. This hike is recommended only for seasoned hikers comfortable with both descent and ascent. If you prefer not to hike, you’re welcome to take the cable car back down to town or return to the chalet for a well-earned rest. Since altitude can affect everyone differently, a relaxed afternoon or dinner in the village is a perfect way to wind down. Your safety ill always be a priority. This will be a day to remember.

* Time spent at the top of Aiguille du Midi will me max 1.5 hours

• Breakfast – included
• Lift pass to Aiguille du Midi

Day 5 - A Gentle Morning & Panoramic Adventure

Today offers a slower pace – take the morning, or even the whole day, to reflect on the past few days and enjoy Chamonix at your leisure, with no fixed itinerary if you choose. You might visit the central square, rich in historic charm, or enjoy a coffee or tea at Shoukâ Café, a speciality roaster using altitude-grown beans. It’s also a chocolatier and offers a wide selection of teas from around the world. If you’re in the mood to sit back and take in the scenery, hop aboard the Petit Train, Chamonix’s small tourist train. It’s a delightful way to experience village life as it winds through the pedestrian streets. For a waffle lunch, consider Le Moncho, located beside the glacial waters running through town or Le Bartavel for great pizza. At 1:00 pm, we’ll meet at the Aiguille du Midi ski lift to head back up the mountain. From the summit, we’ll embark on the Panoramic Mont-Blanc cable car – a breathtaking 30-minute, 5km journey over the Glacier du Géant, crossing into Helbronner, Italy at 3,466 meters (11,371 feet). This experience offers stunning views of glaciers, crevasses, and the dramatic peaks of the Mont Blanc massif. (Details to be discussed.) If you prefer not to join the cable car journey, you’re welcome to use your lift pass to revisit any of the places we’ve explored. Don’t worry – Chamonix is easy to navigate, and English is widely understood. You might return to Le Brévent, relax with a book while watching paragliders launch from Planpraz (halfway up Le Brévent), or head back to the chalet for some downtime. In the evening, explore Chamonix’s many restaurants or enjoy a relaxed dinner at the chalet before heading out to one of the town’s inviting wine bars or local spots for a drink. Fancy a movie in French? Visit Cinéma Vox in the town centre. Whether you choose adventure or rest, the day is yours to enjoy at your own pace.

• Breakfast – included
• Lift pass to Aiguille du Midi – included
• Lift pass to Helbronner, Italy – included

Day 7 - Mer de Glace & the Ice Caves

After breakfast, we’ll depart from the chalet at 9:15 am. A short 5 to 10-minute walk takes us to Montenvers Station, where our next adventure begins. This historic funicular climbs a steep track to a breathtaking vantage point above Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice), offering exceptional views of Les Grandes Jorasses and Les Drus. Our destination, Mer de Glace, is France’s largest glacier – 7 km (4.3 miles) long and 200 meters deep. I’ll share insights into the impact of global warming on glaciers, and you’ll witness firsthand the alarming rate at which Mer de Glace is melting. The scale of this natural wonder is difficult to put into words; it left a lasting impression on me 13 years ago. Since then, the glacier has receded so dramatically that a new cable car line was built to allow access to the glacier and the ice caves once again. It reopened in 2024. Once we arrive, we’ll take a smaller cable car down from the train station to the glacier itself, where you can enter the Ice Cave – a man-made ice grotto carved into the living glacier. This grotto is re-excavated every summer, as the glacier shifts approximately 70 meters per year. Please note: Access requires climbing 430 steps both down and back up from the glacier lift. Inside, you’ll find ice sculptures and caves, as well as the Gallery of Crystals, which showcases some of the finest crystal specimens from the Mont Blanc massif. Back at the top, The Glaciorium offers an engaging exhibition on glaciology, featuring interactive displays about glacier formation, history, and their connection to climate and environmental change. If you’re in the mood for lunch, you’re welcome to dine at the restaurant near the cable car or at the legendary Grand Hôtel du Montenvers restaurant. After visiting the ice caves, you’re free to explore at your own pace. If museums aren’t your thing or you feel ready to head back, you’re welcome to take the Montenvers train back to the station where we began. This train only runs between Chamonix and Mer de Glace, so there’s no chance of getting lost, and it’s conveniently located near our chalet. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at your leisure. Are you up for a little surprise, complete with perhaps the best view in town and a cocktail or glass of wine in hand, join me as we depart from the chalet around 6:15 pm for a relaxed 15–20 minute walk to our venue. After drinks, around 8:00 pm, you’re welcome to choose between dining back at the chalet or heading into town. We’ll go over the options together to match your evening mood.

• Breakfast – included
• Montenverse train – included
• Gondella at Mer de Glace – included

Day 9 - Adieu France! Till next time.

At Zebra Adventures, one of our guiding mottos is to leave places better than we found them. With everyone’s help, we’ll ensure the chalet is left in excellent condition before our scheduled check-out at 10:00 am. I’m currently negotiating a possible late check-out, which may be extended to 12:00 pm – this will be confirmed closer to the time and is based on guests arriving after us. Whether you’re continuing your travels through Europe or heading home, your shuttle transport from Chamonix to Geneva Airport will be arranged once your flight details are finalised – just as I’ve done in South Africa. Hand on heart, once you’ve experienced this journey through the Chamonix region with Zebra Adventures, you’ve truly explored the French Alps in all their glory.

• Breakfast – included
• Airport shuttle – included

Day 2 - Morning Market & Mountain Memories

Start your day with a self-serve breakfast at the chalet, then join me for a short walk to Place du Mont Blanc, where Chamonix’s vibrant Saturday Market awaits. From 9:00 am – 2:00 pm, the square comes alive with mountain charm and local flair. Browse stalls brimming with fresh produce, artisan cheeses, rustic breads, and cured meats, alongside unique clothing and handcrafted goods. This market has been a beloved tradition for years, and it’s the perfect spot to pick up something delicious for lunch or dinner. After exploring the market, take some time to wander through Chamonix’s quirky shops and soak in the alpine charm. There’s plenty to discover, enough to keep you entertained between our excursions throughout the week. We’ll regroup at St Michel Church after lunch for an afternoon excursion to Le Brévent. We’ll take a cable car ride to admire the breathtaking Mont Blanc massif – an unforgettable introduction to the majestic scenery that will shape your tour. Since you’ve all conquered a cable car ride with me before, I know you’ll handle it like pros! At the summit, we’ll decide whether to take a short hike to explore the trails. If you prefer to relax, there’s a beautiful mountaintop restaurant where you can enjoy a coffee and a book, with panoramic mountain views all around. Late afternoon and evening are yours to enjoy – relax in the chalet’s garden with a glass of wine, or head out to explore Chamonix’s dining scene at your leisure.

• Breakfast – included
• Transport to Le Brévent – included
• Lift Pass – included

Day 4 - Day trip to Annecy

Wake up to the mist gently lifting from the valley as the sun rises over Mont Blanc. You might even spot early paragliders gliding through the morning air. At 9:00 am, we’ll depart for a scenic one-hour drive to Annecy, often called “The Venice of the Alps.” This charming town is known for its cobbled streets, winding canals, and pastel-coloured houses, all set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Annecy – one of Europe’s cleanest lakes, surrounded by majestic mountains. No need to pack lunch today! You’ll enjoy an immersive food experience led by a local guide, combining a walking tour of the old town with tastings of traditional dishes in hidden gems known only to locals. It’s the perfect blend of culture, history, and cuisine. After the food tour, you’ll have free time to explore Annecy at your own pace – stroll along the lake, browse local shops, or simply soak in the atmosphere. We’ll be back in Chamonix late afternoon. Be sure to pick up a few goodies while you’re out – that’s dinner sorted!

• Breakfast – included
• Transport to Annecy – included
• Food tour – included

Day 6 - Waterfalls & Nature

Bring on the French Pastries! We’ll be leaving a little later this morning, at 9:30 am. After a scenic 20-minute drive, we’ll arrive in the charming village of Servoz, nestled in the Haute-Savoie region of France. This area offers a breathtaking journey through one of the Alps’ most dramatic natural landscapes. Our morning will be spent at none other than Les Gorges de la Diosaz, a spectacular natural wonder formed by water flowing down from Mont Buet, which stands at 3,099 meters. This hidden gem is renowned for its wild beauty and a series of dramatic waterfalls carved by the Diosaz River along a natural fault line in the mountains. Visitors walk along suspended pathways and footbridges, which hug the cliff walls and offer stunning views of the gorge. The walk takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on how long you choose to pause and read the many informative panels along the way. The site is a testament to early alpine engineering and a haven for nature lovers, featuring over 100 species of ferns and interpretive displays on its geology and history. We’ll return to the chalet around lunchtime, and the afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure. In the evening, there’s an optional dinner at La Calèche, a beloved 81-year-old French/Savoie restaurant known for its traditional charm and regional cuisine.

• Breakfast – included
• Transport to Les Gorges de la Diosaz
• Entrance to Les Gorges de la Diosaz

Day 8 - Final Day in Chamonix: A Time to Reflect

Today marks our final day to explore the Chamonix region, and I’d love to take you to a few special places. While the details are still being finalised, here’s the general idea: For the early risers, why not join me for a brisk morning walk to the local bakery? We’ll pick up some fresh pastries and get the blood flowing. Since this is also our packing day, I’d like us to take a moment to reflect on the week – no, no more stones to leave behind, just a chance to pause and take stock. But hey, if there’s still a stone to be left, be my guest. I’ll be taking you to two very special spots. It’s not particularly grand or spectacular, but it’s a peaceful place to enjoy a coffee and reflect together. After breakfast, with packed lunches in hand, we’ll head out to the Basson Glacier. While we won’t be able to get close to the glacier due to how far it has receded in the past 5 years, we’ll enjoy coffee with a stunning view. The real magic lies in the journey – scenic, exhilarating, and unforgettable. After descending, we’ll make our way to a nearby location, close to the Mont Blanc Tunnel (11.611 km (7.215 mi) long, connecting France and Italy). Due to the location, we’ll need to monitor traffic conditions. If all goes well, we’ll have time to pause and reflect at the location – fingers crossed! We plan to return shortly after 3 pm. Our farewell dinner will be hosted by – tadaaa! – me, at our beautiful chalet for one last time. After descending, we’ll make our way to a nearby location, close to the Mont Blanc Tunnel at 11.61 km (7.215 miles) long, connecting France and Italy. Traffic permitting, we’ll have time to pause and reflect at the location before returning to the chalet shortly after 3:00 pm. We’ll come together for a special farewell dinner, a shared meal that celebrates friendship. Everyone is invited to bring their favourite food and snacks they’ve discovered in Chamonix: a delicious cheese, cured meat, fresh bread, or a sweet treat; it’s entirely up to you. It’s a beautiful way to reflect on our journey together, share stories and highlights, say our goodbyes, and perhaps begin dreaming of the next adventure that awaits.

The itinerary mentioned above serves as a preliminary plan. Your final itinerary will be sent to you three months before your tour.

Accommodation

Welcome to your Alpine retreat. Throughout your stay, you’ll enjoy the comfort of a stylish six-bedroom, five-bathroom chalet, thoughtfully designed with a modern alpine aesthetic. This property is situated in a peaceful residential area, just a five-minute stroll from the main street, the vibrant Saturday morning market, and the local bus stop, offering both tranquillity and convenience. Inside, the bright and spacious TV room serves as a second living area and opens directly onto the terrace, making it an ideal space to unwind after a day of adventure. Outdoors, the private pool offers sweeping views of Brévent and the majestic Mont Blanc range, creating a truly breathtaking backdrop. With its generous plot of land, serene surroundings, and close proximity to the town centre, this chalet is a fantastic choice for the group, combining comfort, charm, and convenience. Note: Five bedrooms and five bathrooms will be available for your group. I will also be staying at the chalet during your visit.

Pre- and Post Tour Accommodation

Departure Day -11 September: On the final day of the tour, you’ll be transported to Geneva Airport. If you’re considering extending your journey from there, I’d be happy to help with suggesting an itinerary within Switzerland. While I won’t be able to assist with accommodation bookings, I can recommend towns to visit and help map out your route. These options can be discussed in more detail, and I highly encourage exploring them if time allows – you’ll be so close! Alternatively, you might choose to explore more of France or even cross into Italy from Chamonix.

Some fantastic nearby destinations include:

• Gruyères (approx. 3 hours from Chamonix)
• Zermatt (approx. 3.5 hours from Chamonix)
• Lauterbrunnen (approx. 4 hours from Chamonix)
• Grindelwald (approx. 30 minutes from Lauterbrunnen)

Board Basis

Breakfast will be provided and set up for self-service – perfect if you’d like to head out for an early morning stroll and watch the village and mountains awaken as the sun rises over Mont Blanc. Lunch and dinner: Since we’ll be out and about during most lunchtimes, I highly recommend preparing your own on-the-go meals — think sandwiches, fruit, and snacks. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy the region’s delicious cheeses like Reblochon, Tomme de Savoie, Abondance, Beaufort, and Raclette, paired with cured meats. This not only helps keep costs down but also gives you a chance to visit the local fromageries (cheesemongers) and bakeries – and maybe even practice a bit of your French 😉. Bakeries are plentiful, and you’ll find cheesemongers and cured meats on nearly every corner. There’s also a grocery store in the village where you can pick up anything else you might need. Restaurants are abundant, ladies, and while we don’t need to dine together every night – as preferences and budgets vary – I’m more than happy to offer recommendations or help you choose where to go. Opening dinner is included.

Weather

September in Chamonix is a fantastic time to visit. Daytime temperatures typically range from 15–23 °C (57 – 73.4 °F), while nights can drop to 0 –10 °C (32 – 50 °F). A T-shirt paired with a wind-resistant jacket works well during the day, but you’ll need something warmer in the evenings, and a puffer jacket is a must at higher altitudes. Expect a crisp chill in the air, especially at higher altitudes – temperatures at the summit of Aiguille du Midi can reach as low as -10 °C (14 °F). Come prepared with a scarf, beanie, gloves, and hiking boots (bonus if they are waterproof). Mountain weather can change quickly, so it’s best to be prepared for a range of conditions, including the occasional shower. We’ll go over all of this in more detail.

Dress Code

Chamonix is an alpine town, so there’s no need to dress up for dinner, most restaurants are relaxed and welcome guests in jeans, hiking boots, or trainers (which can also help you stay warm). That said, pack a pair of jeans and a nice shirt for that one special evening, you never know what surprise might be waiting!

General

During your free time, feel free to head back up the mountains using your lift pass, which also includes access to free local transport. One convenient option is Le Mulet, a complimentary shuttle bus that runs a circular route around Chamonix. You can hop on and off as you please – perfect if you’d rather not walk. I’ll provide you with a map upon arrival to help you navigate the area with ease.

Early Arrival / Transport to Chamonix: If you’d like to arrive a few days early, you can fly into Geneva Airport and spend some time exploring Geneva or Lausanne to acclimatise. The transport company can arrange to collect you from the airport – details to be discussed. Alternatively, you’re welcome to make your way to Chamonix by train, which is a scenic and relaxing option.
